The Art of Raku Biography

Biography: My love for clay began when a dear friend invited me to take a night class in ceramics. I knew from the moment I wheel threw my first piece of pottery how important it would become in my life. I went on to continue my pursuit in ceramics and trained for several years until eventually I was introduced to the Raku firing process by my professor. I immediately fell in love with the metallic and iridescent glaze effects, the whimsical tendency of the glazes and the almost instantaneous final result.  I began sculpting many years ago and came up with the idea of combining sculpture with my wheel thrown work, consequently producing my lidded sculpted pieces. They have since become my signature work. Occasionally, I sculpt female figures and place atop my wheel thrown work. The women I sculpt symbolize the "female condition" of today's society and the affects this has on women emotionally. I feel these pieces portray the spirit and energy of women from all walks of life. I believe each day brings a new beginning. I try to reflect the change and passion that philosophy entails in my work.

Raku firing is extremely fast compared to other types of firings. Once a prepared piece is placed inside a Raku kiln, the piece can be completed in as little as 40 minutes. This method is much more precarious (breakages) but allow for much more vibrant colors.  Raku pieces are also entirely unique as the Raku process produces unpredictable results.
